COURSES

  • INTRODUCTION TO THE PhD COURSE AND GOOD SCIENTIFIC PRACTICE (AAU – 1ECTS)

Objective: To get a basic understanding of how the PhD education at Aalborg University is structured as well as the formal requirements related, and to get support on the development of the PhD study plan.Date: 29 April, 2016

  • PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION (AAU – 2.5ECTS)

Objective: To train and improve skills in oral communication especially at scientific conferences and in university teaching. The course had both a theoretical and a practical approach. The theoretical approach was achieved by conceptualising the planning, presentation and evaluation processes, emphasising the communicative aspects. The practical approach by training the oral communication in a video laboratory where all the participants were asked to make a presentation of both a self-selected subject and a self-selected situation. Participants got feedback from other participants and lecturers and also commented on others’ presentations.Date: 5-7 April, 2017

  • WRITING AND REVIEWING SCIENTIFIC PAPERS (AAU – 3.75ECTS)

The aim is to improve the competence in writing and reviewing scientific papers. The course hadpractical approach and focused on the craftsmanship needed as a scientist. The discussions addressed general issues related to scientific writing. The course was organised in three activities. First, the PhD students were asked to study selected literature on the subject. Second, two one-day seminars were devoted to presentations by the organisers, discussions amongst participants, and lectures by invited speakers. Third, the PhD students were required to practice both writing and reviewing in specially designed exercises.

Date: 20 September 2016, and 22 November 2016.

  • ICONN SUMMER SCHOOL 1. (AAU – 5ECTS)

This course covered a broad introduction about hydrodynamics and control of WECs with the following topics:

  • Wave energy utilization
  • Wave measurements and analysis
  • Wave energy resource assessment
  • Oceanography
  • Hydrodynamic modelling
  • Mooring system analysis
  • Control of WECs
  • Communications aware control
  • Wireless sensor networks

The course also included a complementary training in the form of a workshop about writing skills, presentations and oral communication skills.

Date: 29 May 2017 – 2 June 2017

  • NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL MODELLING AND CONTROL OF WAVE ENERGY CONVERTERS (Aalborg University/University College of Cork – 5ECTS)

The main objective of this course was to get a training on numerical and experimental modelling and control of Wave Energy Converters (WECs).

The following tasks were performed:

  • Wave measurement and generation in wave tank
  • Numerical investigation of the performance of a WEC
  • Experimental investigation of the performance of a WEC with and without control

The course was arranged jointly by Doctoral School of Engineering and Science at Aalborg University, Ecole Centrale de Nantes and University College Cork.

Date: 4-8 September 2017
